Bodega Bay is located 68 miles north of San Francisco along the Sonoma Coast. Bodega Bay was made famous as the location for Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds.”
Hitchcock chose Bodega Bay for his film since the short story by Daphne DuMaurier took place in an English seashore village where murderous birds attacked the local villagers. The film was released in 1963 with several of the buildings in the film still in existence. The 150 year old Potter School was repaired for the film and is a private residence today. The Catholic Church and the film shots of children running from the schoolhouse were shot on Taylor Street in Bodega Bay (1/2 mile north of the Visitors Center). Some of the restaurant scenes and the gas station fire and boat dock scenes were shot at the Tides Warf and Restaurant. For more movie information see www.bodegabay.com/features/birds.
